Wireless portable phones, better known as the cordless phone is one of the most useful inventions made today. These little hand held devices communicate through a radio base that is connected to your land-line. Whenever you use them you will have to stay within the range of the radio signal of the base or you end up losing the connection. The range varies from one phone to the next and also depends a lot on how much inference you are getting, but generally you should be able to use them throughout your home and into the yard without too much of a problem.
We have come a long way from the old rotary phones that worked by connecting to your land-line. With your cordless phone you will still need your land-line connection or something similar like VOIP or a Magic Jack which connects through your internet. You will also need an electrical outlet to power your radio base as well as recharge you battery.

The battery is needed so your hand held device can communicate with the base through the use of a radio signal. You will find that from time to time you will need to replace the battery even though it gets charged when you place it on the base. Finding a battery should be relatively easy unless you have an older model phone which may require you to contact the manufacturer or you can simply replace it with a new phone.
Many people still have a concern about privacy when it comes to cordless phones, which is a problem because the phone conversations can be heard by anyone with a radio scanner. It is not so much an issue as it used to be because the phones now days do have more security than what was previously used. I recommend using at least a 2.4 GHz phone or a 5.8 GHz as they have better security than some of the others.
Anyone that has used a cordless phone can witness to the fact that they are convenient especially if you want to have the freedom to move around your home while on the phone. You should also know that many of the new cordless phones are just as clear as your land-line ever was. With such convenience at your fingertips it isn't too hard to understand why you'll find a cordless phone in almost every home.
With so many different models and features to choose from a lot of people are having a hard time deciding what cordless phone would best fit their needs. Many of the new models come with two handsets and only one base which are really great for anyone that would like two phones, but only have one land-line connection installed in the home. If price is a concern you can rest assured that finding a cordless phone in your budget isn't that hard because some of the cheaper models are not much more than you would pay for a meal.
